At Adepticon in 2010 (dear lord emperor thats nearly 10 years ago!) several scenarios were played for the tournament held. One of those scenarios involved a Black Hole.
Space has always intrigued me and Black Holes are one of those topics that has intrigued me the most. So the idea of being able to incorporate one into a game of BFG is an awesome one to me.

The question of specific space marine rules and traits have been floating around the community for a while and legion specific ships too.
While the likes of the Conqueror and Terminus Est do have rules in place the fact that there are 18 original legions and then tonnes of chapters/warbands floating around makes the creation of fleet specific rules and ships quite tricky (although there is a Heresy list, see below). Every so often on the Facebook pages and also on my Instagram I will see a question around how to build chaos cruisers to meet the correct class.
While the Imperial ships have several obvious configurations the Chaos ones are not so easy to work out from just the drawing in the rule books. I have never overly worried about the physical model for my chaos ships being 100% accurate (especially with the murder, slaughter and carnage classes) but there are those that like to be accurate. So below are the assembly guidelines for each of the standard Chaos cruisers from the original books. I hope it helps: Part of the fun of the hobby is seeing your painted creations battle it out on the tabletop but if your models don’t have a suitable background and scenery to fight it out on the experience can be lessened a bit.
It’s the same with Battlefleet Gothic. While space is a well vacuum, devoid of life that doesn’t mean your battlefield should be devoid of features to spruce it up. So I finally decided to stop relying on my fellow admirals and make my own asteroid fields.
It was sad to see the Specialist Games Forum cease to exist this week, it was a bastion of all things specialist games and it brought back memories of when another battlefleet gothic site when the way of the warp (Port Maw).
Now the latest is that the forum will be back and re-hosted somewhere. However, just in case it isn't or it ever falls again I thought it would be worth having at least one other location you can find all the rules. So..... I always thought that the Kroot would also have smaller ships than just the one huge warsphere that the original game produced (same with the demiurg too, but that for another article).
Then my thoughts were confirmed with the Blackstone Fortress box game release. Within that box set there are ship cards and there is a Kroot vessel in that you can use. However, I felt it looked a little too clean, to refined to be an actual Kroot ship. On Instagram I received a message which also suggested that this particular Kroot has modifications, so it would stand to reason they would have a different ship or a modified one (thanks @ironbeak_mercenaries). So I set about making my own version. Back when Battlefleet Gothic was still supported by games workshop the community was one of the most active out of all the specialist games. They created a lot of fan made content and one of the best was Warp Rift Magazine.
Some new to the hobby may not be aware of these fan created online magazines but they were a source of inspiration to me and others and still are. I commute around an hour every day to work on public transport and so there are long periods of sitting doing nothing. This is perfect for the humble podcast, which have become quite popular again.
While I tend to listen to sport, news and financial podcasts (the boring stuff) there are quite a number of great Warhammer 40k podcasts out there. One aspect of the hobby that I love is creating our own characters, armies and themes, as Im sure many of you do too. This website is an example of me trying to do just that after all.
While Games Workshop has just given us better ability to do just that in 40k with the character creation rules they have just released they never did anything like that for Battlefleet Gothic. So what to do? As battlefleet gothic is an out of production game (at the moment) I have quite often purchased second hand ships from various sources.
Due to this, quite often the ships are already painted. Sometimes they are painted well and I feel bad to remove the paint, but then sometimes the ships are lathered in paint and need a bath. So how to remove the paint? |
