As battlefleet gothic is an out of production game (at the moment) I have quite often purchased second hand ships from various sources. Due to this, quite often the ships are already painted. Sometimes they are painted well and I feel bad to remove the paint, but then sometimes the ships are lathered in paint and need a bath. So how to remove the paint? It seems that this question pops up every few weeks online on various facebook pages and forums. I use a product called Simple Green, put simply it works the best on metal models and will take off the worst of paint jobs from plastic and resin. I have used Dettol in the past, which works wonders but the smell remains after use I have found. Also if you leave it too long then the Dettol can melt plastic and resin. Also mixing Dettol with water will create a black sludge substance that is viscous and wont come off. A benefit I have found of Simple Green is that it doesn’t matter how long I have left the models in the bath for, it hasn’t damaged any (yet). In the UK I have also used Fairy Power Spray and that seems to be one of the best too. However, as you can see from the pictures, the paint comes off quite nicely with the Simple Green. These were left in the liquid for a week. So I just put the models into an old jam jar and pour the liquid in and leave for a week or more. The after a bit of time, usually a week, I pull out the models and give them a scrub with an old tooth brush and will warm water. If they paint is a little stubborn then I put them back in simple green for a bit longer.
I make sure that once I am happy with the process I wash all the simple green off and dry in paper towels. Then its ready for undercoating.
