Part of the fun of the hobby is seeing your painted creations battle it out on the tabletop but if your models don’t have a suitable background and scenery to fight it out on the experience can be lessened a bit. It’s the same with Battlefleet Gothic. While space is a well vacuum, devoid of life that doesn’t mean your battlefield should be devoid of features to spruce it up. So I finally decided to stop relying on my fellow admirals and make my own asteroid fields. I have made planets before, which you can see here ( ) but I hadn’t got round to making my own asteroids, which honestly are the some of the most common scenery used in BFG. So I picked up a packet of the small polystyrene balls and a few larger ones (new planets) and set to work. I used some old table coasters as the base and glued in some flight bases. I then used PVA glue to hold the balls in place. The beauty and curse of polystyrene is that if you spray them directly with the undercoat then they melt – perfect for asteroids. I just used standard chaos black spray from Games workshop. I then dry brushed the asteroids with mechanicus standard grey to add a bit of variety to them. I also used typhus rot to add a bit of a dirty effect to them and add texture to them.
I was tempted to also used some sand to add a more grainy look to them but decided against it in the end. And here they are, the completed asteroid fields ready for the next game.
