AuthorAdmiral Crows So much to defend, so little to defend it with. Admiral Conreptus stared blankly at the days reports streaming in from across the Mutara sector. The glow of the auspex casting a sorrowful green glow over the wisened admiral' face. It had been nearly a century since the Great Rift cut the Imperium in two. A century since Mutara Fleet Command had had any contact from outside the sector. It had been nearly a decade since the armadas of chaos had poured into the sector enmasse. The screen flickered and broke admirals contemplation. The daily misery had been replaced by an emblem he hadn't seen in years. His heart quickened, a mixture of dread and excitement. There was an incoming transmission from the inquisition. With feverish excitement Conreptus punched in his authorisation code and the connection was made. Staring back at him was the unmistakable face of one of the Imperiums most ruthless and successful elite. "Lord Admiral, I trust you are well and keeping the light of the emperor burning in these dark times. I am inquisitor Siegfried Crows and I am in need of your assistance." "Indeed inquisitor, how can I help" whispered Conreptus, leaning in close to the screen. "My fleet is inbound and I require a vessel and a crew that are familiar with the region and have experience dealing with heretics". The admiral slumped back in his chair and pondered. With his fleet already stretched so thin he could ill afford to lose any vessel. On the other hand an inquisitorial 'request' was never just a request. He leant forward and straightened his tunic, "My Lord Crows, you can take the the Divinity's Shield, She and her captain are supremely capable and would make a fine accompaniment to your fleet." On screen he could see the inquisitors brow furrow as they examined the history of the Divinity's Shield. "A Vengence class grand cruiser, 7 successful engagements in the last 5 years, 4 confirmed kills of traitor vessels..' "One of which was the renegade vessel 'Righteous Spear', an Overlord class sir" Conreptus cut in. The inquisitor nodded approvingly, "Impressive indeed Admiral. Very well, have her captain rendezvous with my fleet at space dock 42 for recomissioning. I'm having coordinates transmitted to you now. Oh and Admiral, have faith. The Emperor always protects." Through the grainy image of the screen Conreptus thought he saw the a hint of a smile. Just as the transmission was cut. He let out a heavy sigh and rose from his desk. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest. The mere threat of an inquisiton fleet in the area would reduce the level of pirate activity and allow Battlefleet Mutara to focus on the xenos and Traitor legions ransacking the sector. The tide may finally have turned.
