The Arch Baron Lord Vanneus is thought to be behind several raids on outlying systems in the Turbidious Sector. A known powerful warlock formerly of the vile Thousand Sons legion he escaped the Rubric curse cast on his chapter but only barely. A powerful sorcerer in his own right, Vanneus hated being in the shadow of his more well-known and illustrious brethren like Ahriman and so left the Legion to forge his own path. Drawing like-minded individuals to himself Vanneus brought together a powerful cabal of sorcerers that utilised mutants as their main source of manpower. These mutants are known as 'the Craven'. This cabal foresaw the dark crusade in the Turbidious Sector to come and the potential to increase their power base and gain greater favour with their patron god, with Vanneus at the centre of this. Seeing these visions the Baron and cabal struck an uneasy alliance with Abel Vargas, agreeing to serve the newly titled Warmaster in exchange for any arcane knowledge found by the ‘The Butchers’ forces and specifically in relation to several artifacts from the Dark Age of Technology called the Cradle of Origins. The Inquisition understands that the Cradle of Origins consists of various different artifacts, with each having different effects. Guided only by what Vanneus has described as his ‘Exalted Oracle’ the fleets of Tzeentch complete well-coordinated attacks that strike at key locations usually trying to locate these old artifacts. The Oracles fleet only fights on its terms and this is always to the detriment of the Imperium. Recent attacks on the shrine world of Queens Fall show evidence of this. The warlock’s forces were driven off but not before the great artefact called the Mirror of Origins had been stolen. The artefact is thought to contain a piece of soul that belonged to what the Eldar called ‘the Old Ones’. That is the third artefact thought to have fallen into Vanneus hands, the others being the Prime Mantle and Disc of Futures. There are thought to eight Cradles but their whereabouts are unknown. Vanneus leads his fleet from the battleship 'Tears of Betrayal', a powerful battleship. The Tears of Betrayal is a unique vessel; only one may ever be in a Chaos fleet. It is a ponderous vessel and may not use Come To New Heading special orders. Additionally, it must be used with the following special rules. Mark of Tzeentch: This ship bears the Mark of Tzeentch as part of its point cost; it does not have to be paid for separately by the ship‟s commander. It may only have the mark of Tzeetnch. Due to the warp creatures that inhabit the ships very structure they whisper the potential outcomes and futures to the warlord present. Once per battle it automatically passes a command check or leadership test- with no roll required. One potential hope is that the Baron is a vain creature that hates being under the heel of Vargas, a warrior Vanneus sees as inferior to himself. For the Arch Baron who once walked when the Emperor did so amongst mankind as part of that Great Crusade, Vargas and his forces are pale imitations of those that came before or at least in the Barons eyes.
Jealously and pride is something the Inquisition has long hoped to exploit. For the alliance between the two former Space Marines is strained at the least, it’s a dangerous game for the Imperium to play.
