The Astral Lions are generally a codex compliant Space Marine Chapter that were originally based the Lindholm subsector in the Turbidious Sector. However, their Homeworld was destroyed and the Lions are now a crusader fleet based. The loss of their Homeworld due to Chaos is seen as a great shame in the Chapter and so they have self-exiled themselves to a crusader fleet. The Chapters aim is to purge all Chaos from the Sector once and for all. It is rumoured that the destruction of their world was caused by traitors from within but the Inquisition has been unable to confirm these rumours. A similar fate is thought to have befallen the Storm Wardens chapter as well and so there is always a seconded Storm Wardens strike cruiser to the Astral Lions fleet, and vice versa. Its seems both chapters have suffered and a mutual goal to save their homeworlds has arisen. There is still some distrust between the two chapters though, as the Astral Lions refuse the intake the new Primaris troops while the currently seconded ship of the Storm Wardens is purely Primaris. This has caused friction between to two brotherhoods. Being a fleet based Chapter now the Astral Lions have a large fleet with which to dispatch the Emperors judgement. The fleet typically operates as a whole but is known to have been separated on several occasions before rendezvousing again. The separation and reformation means quite often spoils of war in the form of defeated ships & hulks will be incorporated into the fleet to supplement the existing flotilla. This has resulted in some friction between Battlefleet Turbidious, with concerns the Astral Lions fleet is too powerful a naval fleet to remain unregulated. However, its seems that every time an envoy is dispatched to take a census of the Astral Lions fleet it always passes the strict ships quota. The chapter also has standing protection fleet around their former homeworld, this fleet will chase away any ship that strays too close to the world. These ships operate independently of the main fleet. While the Chapter Master is Erias Daravian the fleet is commanded by Fleet Master Halrik Angrad, who has commanded the fleet for almost as long as Daravian has been Chapter Master. Fleet Master Halrik Angrad The fleet is known to consist of at least two battlebarges, two relics that were given to the newly formed chapter by the Black Templars. It is thought at least half the fleet that makes up the Astral Lions flotilla was originally given to them by their brethren. Angrad commands from the 'Sigsimund's Light', while Daravian commands 'Sigismund's Oath'. This maintains a balance so that never again can a leader within the chapter command all of the fleet. Sigismund's Oath - purple. Sigsimund's Light - silver However, not all the ships in the fleet were provided by the Black Templars. Several older ship classes have been identified in the fleet and it is thought that these ships have either been found as drifting hulks or claimed in battle by the Astral Lions. Imperial records and witness reports suggest that the Chapter also has a large Venerable Battlebarge in the fleet called ‘Emperors Pride’. It is understood that it and its attending fleet are currently stranded in the Dark Stars region of the Turbidious sector. A huge warpstorm has engulfed some of the systems there where the last reported transmission of the Venerable Battlebarge was received. The hope is once the warpstorms abate then the ‘Emperors Pride’ and its remaining fleet will return.
