Thought to be once a great Librarian that fell to the powers of the dark Gods Warmaster Abel Vargas has built up quite the fleet over the hundreds of years of warfare in the Turbidious sector. Originally making his base of operations out of the Dark Stars zone the brutal warlord has set his sights on the capital world of the sector – Turbidious Prime. Now based in the Abysal Realm within the Turbidious Sub-Sector itself it has been the perfect staging zone for attacks on key systems and shipping lanes in the sub-sector. Prior to this Vargas rose through the ranks of the Astral Lions Chapter and his talent for the warp soon became apparent early on in his time with the Chapter. His temperament was often questioned but his raw affinity with the warp and his control meant often his attitude was overlooked. Quick to anger even before he fell Vargas was not only a powerful Liberian but a supreme combat specialist, so skilled that he was thought to be above even the Astral Lions Emperors Champion in martial skill. While attempting to purge a rebellious sect of the Imperial Truth that would later be known as the Bloodmarked in one of the outer systems of the Turbidious sector, Vargas was captured and subjected to fighting in the death pits of the capital hive city along with several others of his Astartes brothers. The world was well and truly corrupted and the death pits used mutants and xenos with weapons imbued with warp powers and unleashed broken but powerful pyskers into the death pits as well. It is thought that it was this love of close combat coupled with his inherent warp abilities that led Vargas down the path to the ruinous powers and that happened during these death pit spectacles. It is believed that his love for violence grew to such heights in the death pits that his remaining brothers shunned him. Vargas was the only member of the Astral Lions that was rescued when the world was finally liberated, his brethren all slain during their time there. It was rumoured that it was Vargas that had committed their murders. Vargas was subjected to stringent screening but somehow the Liberian was able to deceive the Chapter, his real allegiance was now with the Chaos Gods and they had told Vargas what he needed to do – the Astral Lions needed to fall. To achieve this end Vargas had to master his own inner daemons that controlled him. Firstly he was able to rein in his violent tendencies, control the hate and anger. It seemed not only Khorne had spoken to the Liberian during his time in the death pits. For both Tzeentch and Slaanesh had promised plenty to Vargas as well. The former helping with schemes and the later with perfecting the new chaos champions martial skill. This all eventually culminated in the destruction of the Astral Lions homeworld, a wrong so great that the Chapter still feels the pain some 700 years later. Vargas martial abilities was unrivalled in the Chapter and while some in the Chapter objected, the Liberian was given the ‘Lions Claws’ a unique set of lightening claws which he used to great effect when he destroyed the Chapters homeworld. The Warmaster keeps a retinue of body guards, consisting of fellow fallen Astartes from the Astral Lions. In addition the Butcher has a Sslyth that is on guard at all times. This xenos warrior has killed many an assassin, both Imperial and Chaso alike. Some of the Warmasters Warband assaults an Imperial Guard position. Through careful manipulation, charisma and sheer brutality Vargas has brought under his command many former rivals. Although boasting a large fleet, old Astral Lions ships and pirated vessels, the bringing to heel of other factions throughout the Turbidious Sector under his control has swelled the Warmasters fleet measurably. All four of the Chaos Gods pantheon is represented in the fleet although they mainly operate separately they have come together for key stages in Vargas plans, such as the capture of the Craftworld Lanruin.
The Warmaster typically controls his crusade from his base on the ruined Crafftworld but when he ventures out from his lair it is usually aboard his flagship the ‘Chaos Eternal’. He will also command the salvaged Planet Killer from time to time but much of that responsibility is given to the former Imperial Admiral Lord Dracon in the Warmasters stead.
