Chapter 1 985.M41 Orbital space was filled burning wreckage and dying men, defence stations and system defence boats exploding in sequence as they futilely tried to hold back the invaders. They fought with bravery and determination, they fought with everything they had but it was to no avail, the odds against them were impossible to overcome. Ploughing through their ranks were the towering behemoths of Imperial warships, their weapon batteries and lances tearing through the paltry resistance with ease. Cruisers, escort frigates, battlecarriers and troop barges, each and every one an ancient and mighty giant of the void but none amongst them could match the titanic leviathan at their head: the legendary Thunderlord.

Book 1: Maledicti Venator, Serrati Stellas, Tenebris Resurget, Finis Fide, Tergum Cultro. Omni Honore Chapter 1 975.M41 Through the empty wastes of deep space a hundred tiny lights moved. Twinkling comets drifting on the gravity currents between warp-jump points, trailing plasma wakes behind them. These were a motley collection of worn out and dilapidated scows, repurposed to serve as cargo ships, bulk haulers and tankers but by far the vast majority were Pilgrim Ships. Within their holds tens of thousands of faithful souls prayed for the chance to lay eyes upon their destination, each one of them giving away all their worldly possessions to lay eyes upon the spires of Sacred Terra. The convoy moved slowly between Warp Translation points, just another hop through real space before plunging back into the haunted depths of the Immaterium. Tergum Cultro Chapter 1 965.M41 The noise of the artillery barrage battered her ears, pounding like someone was beating her skull with a mallet. The detonations shook her bones as she clung to the wet mud, pressing her body down into the bottom of the trench as she prayed for survival. Above her head showers of mud and blood fountained high, falling upon her in a cloying mix of substances that clung to her shoulders. The smell was incredible, a mix of wet earth, entrails and voided bowels that described the deaths of her men. She knew she should be leading her troopers forward but it was impossible, Lieutenant Marisa was pinned by the artillery barrage and could not even see her platoon, let alone lead them into battle. Book1 Maledicti Venator, Serrati Stellas, Tenebris Resurget Finis Fide Chapter 1 The woods may have been dark but they were far from silent. The forest was filled with the chirp of insects, the swaying of the pine trees in the midnight gloom and the busy life of small animals. Through that tapestry of noise moved a dozen shadowy figures, creeping along with innate woodcraft. They were wrapped in blackened cloaks, broken only by the protruding barrel of antique las-locks with their bulky slide-recharge mechanisms. They advanced in a huddle of grey shapes, keeping close together for protection and watching the shadows for enemies. Eventually they came to a small clearing and spread out to check every nook and cranny for danger. After a few minutes one of them straightened and shrugged off his cloak. Beneath the drab fabric he wore tanned leathers with webbing filled with rations, kit, tool and ammo, and around his neck hung a small stone on a piece of string. His face was worn, with a greying beard and tired eyes. On one arm were stitched the stripes of a PDF sergeant, whereas the other bore the double-headed eagle. Book1 Maledicti Venator, Serrati Stellas, Tenebris Resurget. Tenebris Resurgent 950.M41 From high on the mountainside one could see for hundreds of miles, the endless plains sweeping away until they hazed to nothing. Dotted over that plain were soaring cathedrals and minarets, all gilded in gold and boasting pointed spires or outlandish statues. Sacellum was a shrine world, an entire planet set aside for the worship of the Emperor, its every resource poured into glorifying Him on Terra while the huddled masses starved in shanty towns around the foundations of the Basilicas and Templums. Book1 Maledicti Venator, Serrati Stellas Serrati Stellas 945.M41 Serrati Stellas Chapter 1 In the vast darkness of space points of light moved, bright sparks against the infinite black. From a distance they appeared little more than cinders cooling to ash but as the viewer approached they grew in size and stature. At a closer range it was apparent each one was kilometres long, bearing weapons the size of buildings and armour equally thick with plasma wakes snaking behind them. They were sleek killers of the void, fast predators feared and beloved in equal measure by the citizens of the Imperium. Their dark blue and grey heraldry declared their fealty and even a first-year Naval cadet would have recognised them for being three Hunter class escorts and a Strike Cruiser of the Adeptus Astartes, from the Storm Heralds Space Marines. The cruiser was a scarred veteran of the void, a survivor of countless engagements and upon her hull was the name 'Manifest Destiny'. AuthorM.S Lovegrove Maledicti Venator
905.M41 The dank jungle was close and humid, thick with hanging vines and the buzz of insects, everywhere small animals went about their daily lives. The air was still and hushed, pregnant with tension as the feeling of a million, million eyes watching from the dark. In a small clearing brittle branches shook in strange ways that had nothing to do with the slight breeze, and the thick leaf mould stirred with the creep of beetles. AuthorJake Ball Commander Falco of the Endeavour class light cruiser Enceladus picked an invisible mote of dust from his otherwise impeccable Ultima Segmentum grey uniform. His fine features would be called weather-beaten were it not for the fact that he had spent much of his adult life in the artificial environment of Imperial starships. The crags and lines of his face were not caused by wind, rain and cold, but by the relentless pressure of command, and the unceasing vigilance of patrols that stretched for years. Falco was not tall, but had a wiry build typical of his birth world of Kyrinov. His eyes were a steel grey, piercing as he looked through the forward bridge windows down the long, glacial white fore section of his command; to the blood red and beaten gold of the prow.
AuthorTurbidious Unknown Treasure Captain Tselios was not having a good day; the filthy creatures that had invaded his ship had managed to kill most of his crew had driven him and the remnant of the Inquisitors party into the depths of the ‘Fury’. Only he and four others from the command deck had made it down into the engineering decks, he was the only one not injured, or in his eyes, useless. There was Karina, his helmswomen, but her arm had been broken in the first exchanges of the fight and she looked pale. The Inquisitors band were the others, but he couldn’t remember their names. At least they had managed to save him and Karina as they were chased from the bridge by feral looking sub humans but how long they would be able to keep up the hide and seek he didn’t know.
The only hope they had was to make it to one of the engineering decks escape pods on the undamaged port side, so far it appeared that no pods had been launched from that side of the ship. But this meant descending into the bowls of the ship and so far they had not come across any enemy or for that matter any surviving crew. ‘Curious’ Tselios murmured under his breath, but he pushed the thought to the back of his mind. ‘Captain, do we have an estimated time when the reinforcements will arrive?’ Inquisitor Raglon was getting impatient. The Imperial fleet he had arrived with was not on schedule and he had missed the rendezvous. The fleet was a strong flotilla of eight warships and three troop transports, designed to break through the pitiful space defense of Nightfall Minor, with the objective to seize the planet for a staging ground for an assault on the main planet of Nightfall Primus. But the space defenses were not pitiful and the battle in space had turned into a slugging match between two evenly matched fleets. The naval scout group had got it drastically wrong, Raglon would have them interrogated and then disciplined for their lack of diligence if he got the chance. |
